After working with children in rural Limpopo and developing their love for numbers, mathematician Mothupi Kgopa realized how difficult it was for them to afford scientific calculators. Kgoga, who started the Kgopa Foundation for Mathematics in 2017 to help home learners, decided to remedy this situation by launching its own brand of affordable scientific calculators – Geleza.

He told Vutivi News he believes Geleza will be a game-changer for African children learning math. “I’ve been training mathematicians for 10 years and have trained them in places such as the Western Cape, Free State, Gauteng and Limpopo, where I currently work in Burgersfort,” Kgoga said.

“The idea behind Geleza Calculator came about when I was working with kids in Burgersfort and realized that many of them couldn’t afford a scientific calculator. “When I decided to buy calculators for them, I thought I should part with at least R320 for just one calculator,” he said. After promising the students that he would provide them with calculators, Kgoga researched the calculators, which which led him to launch Geleza last year through his education company called Geleza Tech.
