Online calculator shows you where your vote will have the most impact

NORTHWEST ARKANSAS (KNWA/KFTA) — If you’ve ever wondered how much your vote really matters, now there’s a way to measure it.

Common Ground Arkansas, a nonprofit organization, has created an online tool for voters to see the impact of their vote in the primaries.

Sen. Jim Hendren, an independent who is not running for office, said he founded the organization for people who feel out of place in either political party. Now his team has created a non-partisan online calculator to help you figure out where your voice will be heard the loudest.

The Personal Impact Calculator is divided by county and operates on a point system. Each run on a primary ballot is awarded one point. If a race only has candidates from one political party, it gets another point because the winner of that primary will ultimately be the winner in November.

In Arkansas, we have an open primary, which means you can be registered with one party and still vote on the other party’s ballot in the primary. The calculator tells you which ballot to choose so your vote will make the biggest difference.

“You can always vote wherever you want in November, but if you want to have an impact, and the most impact, you have to vote in May because that’s when most of the decisions are made, and you have to vote in the primary on which ones you’re going to have the most impact,” Hendren said.

For most counties in Arkansas, the calculator shows that voting the Republican party ballot will give you the most votes in the election. This is because there are a number of races without a Democratic nominee, such as in some county sheriff races.
