New carbon calculator helps companies reduce emissions

STOCKHOLM — On March 17, Normative, a global carbon accounting platform, launched its Business Carbon Calculator with help from Google.org, Google’s philanthropy program. The calculator allows small and medium-sized businesses to track and reduce their carbon emissions.

The Normative Business Carbon Calculator is available free of charge through SME Climate Hub, a program that offers tools and resources to help small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) track their environmental impact. The Carbon Calculator enables SMEs to measure emissions and identify emission hotspots, enabling businesses to halve their emissions by 2030 and reach net zero emissions by 2050, in line with the Climate goals aligned with Paris, which is determined to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 C (34.7 F).

According to Normative, SMBs make up 90% of businesses worldwide, and most are involved in product development for large enterprises. According to Normative, scope 3 emissions, or corporate value chain emissions, account for up to 90% of a company’s total emissions.

The lack of resources for SMEs prompted Normative to develop the Business Carbon Calculator. According to a survey by the SME Climate Hub, 63% of SMEs said they did not believe they had the right skills for climate action.

“We need to act now,” said Kristian Rönn, co-founder and chief executive of Normative. “The climate will not wait for us to be ready. We want to make carbon measurement and the race to net zero accessible to everyone. This new tool is our second step towards engaging value chains across the world, and we will continue to develop and push our technology to help companies take climate action.

With the Normative Business Carbon Calculator, companies can enter data, including facility size, electricity, heat and gas expenses, into a form, which will calculate the company’s carbon emissions benchmark. After receiving the baseline, companies will receive training on actions they can take using the tools and resources of the SME Climate Hub.

According to Normative, investing in emissions tracking and reduction has many business benefits, including increased efficiency, reduced operating costs and business risks, brand benefits, and better access to future capital.

“Businesses of all sizes are increasingly recognizing that being kind to the planet is critical to business success,” said Matt Brittin, President of Google EMEA Operations. “But for small and medium-sized businesses, identifying where emissions are coming from – and how to reduce them – can come with unique challenges. Normative’s work to solve this problem with its new free carbon calculator specially designed for SMEs is exciting – and we are proud to work with them.”

Google.org selected Normative for its award, offering the company a 1 million euro ($1.1 million) grant to develop the calculator.

“Small businesses have a substantial opportunity to build more resilient business foundations through climate action,” said María Mendiluce, Managing Director of We Mean Business Coalition, a founding partner of SME Climate Hub. “It is imperative that businesses of all sizes have the tools to prioritize reducing emissions. We are proud that the SME Climate Hub can help bridge this resource gap through tools such as the Normative Business Carbon Calculator.

The Normative Business Carbon Calculator is available on Normative.io.
